Sustainable Development Goals

Learning Goals

- To know, understand, and articulate correctly the key concepts and language of classical chemical thermodynamics.
- To know and understand the thermodynamic approach to physical processes, phase transformations, mixtures, and chemical equilibrium.
- To know and understand the concepts and principles of empirical chemical kinetics and complex reaction mechanisms.
- Apply knowledge to problem solving.
- Develop group work skills.

Contents

1- Properties of gases: ideal gas, real gases, equations of state.
2- Basic concepts of thermodynamics: first law of thermodynamics, thermochemistry.
3- Spontaneous transformations and entropy. Gibbs energy.
4- Phase equilibrium and phase diagrams of pure substances.
5- The properties of mixtures: ideal and real mixtures, coligative properties, phase diagrams of mixtures.
6- Principles of chemical equilibrium. Relationship between equilibrium composition and thermodynamic functions. Response of equilibrium to external disturbances.
7- Chemical kinetics. Elementary and complex reactions. Steady state approach. Unimolecular reactions. Enzymatic catalysis. Chain reactions.

Teaching Methods

Teaching/learning is based on the individual work of the students, supported by the bibliography recommended by the teacher and on notes collected by the students, both during contact hours and in the research carried out individually. The theoretical contact hours, dedicated to the structuring of the matter, the definition of concepts and the orientation of the learning process, are not purely expositive, being illustrated with the resolution of problems and with the presentation of case studies. The hours of theoretical-practical contact are programmed in articulation with the theoretical contact hours, using activities that make practical examples of the themes involved in the theoretical classes.
In addition to presential contacts, the teacher maintains regular contact with students via electronic media, thus answering questions, guiding research, and monitoring learning. The evaluation will be done by a final examination or by the average of two tests (50% 1st test+50% 2nd test)
