Course Overview

The Master in Music Teaching at the University of Évora aims to provide the acquisition of higher skills and knowledge in order to allow access to the labor market in the field of vocational music teaching or access to the corresponding 3rd cycle higher education degrees. Complementarily, it aims to generate capacities for social functionality, critical judgment, learning and autonomous work, individually and collectively, as well as the development of personal and interpersonal skills that allow the exercise of a highly specialized career in the field of vocational music education. The Master's in Music Teaching lasts four semesters and the degree is conditional on passing 120 ECTS credits. It is potentially offered in the following areas of specialization: Flute; Oboe; Clarinet; Saxophone; Bassoon; French horn; Trumpet; Trombone; Tuba; Percussion; Violin; Viola; Cello; Double bass (does not open in 2024-25); Piano; Classical guitar; Accordion; Portuguese guitar (does not open in 2024-25); Drums (does not open in 2024-25); Voice; Composition.

Career Prospects

Teaching in vocational and professional music education schools; pursuing studies at the level of a 3rd Cycle in Music. In accordance with the legal framework for professional qualification for teaching in vocational and artistic areas (Decree-Law 79/2014; Ordinance 693/98; Decree-Law 176/2014), this Master's degree is primarily intended to provide training in this area. It has been designed to meet the needs expressed by both professionals and vocational music education institutions in the region and the country, regarding obtaining legal qualification for teaching, including the recruitment group of their main specialization area and ensemble music (M32).

Specific Entry Requirements

Holders of a higher education degree in the field of music, with 120 credits in Instrumental and Vocal Practice, Musical Training, and Musical Sciences, and none with less than 25 credits, as specified in DL 79/2014, dated May 14. It is also a condition for access to this study cycle: 1. Oral and written proficiency in the Portuguese language and mastery of the essential rules of logical argumentation (cf. Article 17 of Decree-Law 79/2014 of May 14). This condition will be certified through a combination of a written Portuguese language test and an interview. In both, the candidate must obtain approval. The test is mandatory for everyone, regardless of their previous education or professional situation. The application can also be made by presenting a certificate of approval in both components, issued by another higher education institution, where the candidate has undergone tests for the same purpose (no more than two years ago), considering the conditions provided for in Decree-Law 79/2014 of May 14. The written test and interview to assess Portuguese language proficiency will take place on April 2 (1st phase), July 5 (2nd phase), and September 6 (3rd phase) of 2024, at a location and time to be announced. 2. Conducting a selection interview, including a specific access test (instrument/voice/composition); both the oral component of the interview and the specific access test (instrument/voice/composition) are eliminatory, and candidates who do not pass either of them will be excluded. The dates for the selection interview, including the practical test of specific vocational aptitude (instrument/voice/composition), will be as follows: April 3 to 5 (1st phase); July 8 to 10 (2nd phase), and September 9 (3rd phase) of 2024, at times to be announced, at Colégio Mateus d'Aranda. 3. In the application documents, it is necessary to present a certificate of qualifications detailing the credits of each course unit, so that the minimum training credits set for entry to the course can be verified, as determined by the Legal Regime of Professional Qualification for Teaching in Pre-school Education and in Basic and Secondary Education (DL 79/2014 of 14 May, in its current version).
