This curricular unit (UC) is compulsory and taught to first year students of the first cycle of studies of the Degree in Economics and Applied Mathematics to Economics and Management. The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the fundamentals of finance, with a special emphasis on corporate financial management and financial markets.
With UC students should be able to:
- Understand the financial system
- Perform the financial diagnosis of companies
- Use financial information in decision making
- Use basic financial instruments and techniques to evaluate investment projects.

1. Intellectuals: Develop interpretation and critical analysis skills
2. Practices: Provide guidance and knowledge for financial analysis; Ability to work in a team
3. Interpersonal: Ability to write financial reports

Teaching Methods
Various teaching strategies will be used throughout the course, including lectures, discussions, problem solving, as well as presentation and discussion of financial press articles. Students should take an active role in discussions and problem solving sessions.
The fundamental material for the course will be PowerPoint slides and basic bibliography. Several web pages are available to broaden the knowledge and information on each topic.
The evaluation rules adopted in this discipline follow the general rule of the Academic Regulation and fulfill the specific requirements imposed by the Management Department Assembly. Thus, the student may choose the continuous assessment regime or the examination regime.
- Continuous Assessment Scheme: 1 Group Research Paper (40%) and 2 Tests (30% each).
- Exam regime: Written exam (100% of the final grade).
