Master Degree

Course Overview

This Master aims to promote advanced training in special education to meet the demands of inclusive education that is developed in different educational settings, in accordance with the legal framework. Based on the child’s recognition as agent and subject of the educational process, and the demand for educational responses to all children, this master’s degree aims to enable students to become reflective, inquisitive and interventive professionals capable of critically analyse educational situations with focus on planning, evaluation and supervision of contextualized learning opportunities in which all children can develop their learning potential with their peers. It aims to promote the co-construction and deepening of scientific knowledge and know-how to enable students to contribute to the creation of inclusive environments where pedagogical differentiation is fostered, and learning barriers are eliminated. It also seeks the development of cooperation and argumentation competencies that allow interaction with the various players in the children’s educational process (families, teachers, school/group leaders, other technicians) looking to the construction of the Inclusive School.

Career Prospects

Childhood Educators and Teachers of Basic and Secondary Education. Professionals with this course’s curricular certificate, not conferring of Master’s academic degree, with at least five years of teaching service, can be considered specialized in Special Education. The process of accreditation by the Scientific Council of the Continuing Vocational Training is renewed in each edition in accordance with Decree-Law no. 95/97 of 23rd. The master’s degree under Decree-Law No. 15/2007 of January 19, offers the possibility of progression in the teaching career and reducing service time. Development of Professional Psychologists, Speech Therapists, Occupational Therapists, or other technicians who carry out their functions in school context.  

Specific Entry Requirements

Under the terms of the regulations, the holders of the degree of Licenciado, or legal equivalent, in Childhood Education, Teachers of Primary and Secondary Education, Psychology, Psychomotor Rehabilitation, Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy and related areas are the preferred candidates.
