Course Overview

The master's degree in Psychomotricity deepens theoretical knowledge and practical skills on the different areas of knowledge of Psychomotricity. In this master's degree, a scientific attitude towards knowledge and research methodologies is also deepened. In particular, the master's degree in Psychomotricity aims to train psychomotor therapist capable of providing an adequate response to the needs associated with the practice of Psychomotricity in its various areas of intervention - preventive, educational, re-educational, therapeutic. Theoretical knowledge and practical skills are deepened, allowing the understanding of the influence of psychomotor practice in these areas, throughout the life span. The Master's Degree in Psychomotricity grants the recognition of functions and skills of psychomotor therapist Grade II, by the Portuguese Association of Psychomotricity, only after attending a 1st Cycle training in the specific, scientific, and professional scope of psychomotricity, such as the degree in Psychomotor Rehabilitation (psychomotor therapist Grade I). The master's degree in Psychomotricity concludes with a master?s Dissertation or with an internship and respective Internship Report. Only students with the 1st cycle in Psychomotor Rehabilitation (or a degree in Special Education and Rehabilitation), that is, psychomotor therapist Grade I, can undertake an internship and the respective Internship Report. Students from other areas must go on to the dissertation. The internship can be carried out in public and private entities, in the educational, medical, or social sectors, within the scope of education, therapy and rehabilitation. The offer of internships and respective vacancies is dependent on to the number of interested students, the availability of the entities hosting internships and the University's supervisors.

Career Prospects

Given the interdisciplinary training offered by this master program, students will be able to develop psychomotor interventions of therapeutic, preventive, rehabilitative and re-education aids. It is worth mentioning the intervention in kindergartens and day care centers, inclusion resource centers, institutions for the support of people with disabilities or groups at risk of social exclusion, homes and day centers for the elderly, and specialized institutions (including hospitals and clinics) in the field of neurodevelopment and mental health for children and adolescents and for adults.
