Sustainable Development Goals

Learning Goals

In this curricular unit it is intended that the students acquire fundamental knowledge about adsorption by materials. At the end of the curricular unit, the students should be capable of: understanding models and interpretative theories of adsorption from the gas and liquid phases; critically and rationally apply data analysis methods, evaluating the advantages and limitations of each; recognise the complementary nature of methods for obtaining information on porosity and the interaction with the adsorbate; understand the adsorption of various gases and solutes by materials with different surface properties; recognise the role that the type of porosity and surface chemistry play in the performance of the material in various applications. It is also the intention to increase each student’s capacity for initiative and autonomy, in the planning and execution of laboratory tasks, in the organisation and presentation of the information, as well as their integration into research.

Practical component
Analysis of adsorption isotherms. Experimental determination of isotherms of adsorption from gas phase and aqueous solutions by materials prepared in the UC Porous Materials.

Teaching Methods

Teaching is carried out in lecture classes of theoretical nature and practical. Additionally, at the beginning the students are provided with adsorption isotherms on different materials, which they should analyse, in out of time class, quantitatively on the basis of the theoretical concepts which are progressively introduced in the classes, being discussed with the teacher when needed.
Knowledge evaluation may be carried out by: individual written test (mark: NE); analysis of the adsorption isotherms and individual elaboration of a critical summary report (mark: NT); group report and performance during the laboratory classes (mark: NP). Only the written test is obligatory, leaving submission of the other elements to the criterion of each student. This option aims to make the students responsible for their own auto-evaluation of acquired knowledge. Depending on the elements available, the final mark is given by: NF=NE or NF=0.4NE+0.6NT or NF=0.3NE+0.4NT + 0.3NP.
