Learning Goals

1. To know the history of biochemistry and reflect on the importance of this science in actuality;
2. To promote the contact with top research topics in biochemistry, either at fundamental level or as applied science;
3. To value the interdisciplinarity between the areas of knowledge and to identify the relevance of biochemistry in the national and regional context, stretching new challenges for local development, taking into account the UN Sustainable Development Goals (specially ns. 4-6 and 10-15);
4. To address strategies and methodologies for the dissemination of scientific work – academic writing (theses and scientific publications) or patent applications.
5. Encourage active participation in lectures and conferences and in other moments of non-formal learning.

Contents

1. Biochemistry – History of this science and its importance in today's society;
2. Current perspectives and challenges of biochemistry;
3. Strategies and methodology in the dissemination of scientific work
• Thesis writing
• Writing of scientific articles
• Patent applications.

Teaching Methods

The contents will be addressed as seminars with invited speakers. These seminars will take place in 2h sessions, allowing a lecture, followed by a debate, in which the participation of students is highly stimulated and moderated by the professors.

Continuous evaluation:
- Participation of the student - Will be accounted the assiduity and the attitude which is intended to be analytical and communicative (30%);
-Submission of an assignment (written and/or oral) about one of the topics addressed (70%), to be delivered during the teaching period.

Final evaluation:
- Submission of an assignment (written and/or oral) about one of the topics addressed (100%), to be delivered during the examination period.
