- To assess the role that natural and social sciences play in a framework of education for all and lifelong learning;
- To understand and appreciate the role that the area Knowledge of World plays in children's socio-moral intellectual, aesthetic development.

- To relate, in an integrated manner, the area of " Knowledge of the World " with the different content areas in early childhood education;
- To know and use methods, instruments and techniques appropriate to the construction of knowledge within the Natural and Social Sciences;
- To develop students' scientific attitudes in their own work, creating habits of research, selection, organization and processing of information, as well as rigor and objectivity in language;
- To plan in an integrated way themes, within the scope of knowledge of the world, pedagogically appropriate to the preschool context.

Contents

1. The area of Knowledge of the World and the formation of the child
1.1. The Knowledge of the World area in the Curricular Guidelines for Pre-School Education.
1.2. The importance of science education in childhood.
1.3. Addressing gender issues in childhood

2. The educator's knowledge and the children's knowledge.
2.1. Children's conceptions: implications for educator training.
2.2. Scientific learning in early childhood education: "research" as a playful activity driven by the educator.
2.3. Discovering and questioning the natural world..
2.4. The construction of the notions of time and space.

3. Work methodologies and use of resources.
3.1. Experimental activities: organization and planning.
3.2. The physical and social environment as a resource: the preparation and planning field trips.

Teaching Methods

Teaching methodologies will emphasize student participation in class, through discussion, grounded in critical and reflexive intervention, while contributing to the consolidation of their knowledge and the respective mobilization.
Teaching methodologies will promote work focused on critical analysis of texts of relevant educational content, and the construction of simple didactic materials related to the topics addressed and appropriate child context.

The evaluation is continuous and takes place throughout the semester through the realization of Tasks (T), of different nature (individual and/or in group), related to structuring themes of the curricular unit program and a final Task of a scientific nature - teaching on a theme chosen by students, subject to presentation and discussion in the classroom (FT). Final Classification =[(T1+T2+T3+T4)/4]+fT)/2

In the exam regime, students take a written exam (Ex) and a Final Task (FT).
Final Classification = (Ex+FT)/2
