Scientific Area: Mathematics

Teaching languages: Portuguese
Languages of tutoring support: Portuguese

Sustainable Development Goals

Learning Goals

It is intended that students acquire several fundamental concepts in quality control, allowing to know the main quality control charts by variables and by attributes, ways to assess the ability of a process, different acceptance sampling control plans, fundamental concepts of reliability and their relation with monitoring a process or service.
At the end of the course, students should be able to:
• Design, organize, implement and optimize a statistical control of a process or service and to assess its capability to meet specifications;
• Evaluate the capability of the measuring system;
• Evaluate, in a critical way, different sampling methods in quality control;
• Model reliability data with a parametric and a nonparametric approach, being able to apply the best approach in each situation and to interpret, in a critical way, the results obtained;
• Understand the related literature in order to carry out autonomous study of the topics addressed.

Contents

Control charts for variables and attributes.
Process capability analysis. 6-sigma processes.
Capability of the measuring system. Accuracy and precision. Repeatability and reproducibility.
Sampling methods in quality control. Different sampling plans.
Acceptance sampling.
Reliability.
Hazard models.
Optimization in quality control.

Teaching Methods

The teaching sessions are theoretical-practical, combining the concepts with their application to concrete cases in different areas (Economics, Management, healthcare, biological sciences). Sessions include presenting the concepts in real context and analyzing real data using appropriate software.

Students do two individual or group practical assignments (with a weight of 50% each).
If not successful in continuous assessment, the student takes an exam and the individual assignments / group will have 25% weight in the final grade.
