The aim of this Curricular Unit is to provide the Sociology PhD students with structural knowledge on the tourism field as a contemporary intercultural experience.
It focuses on the processes of production, circulation and consuming of a tourism culture emphasizing its symbolic and intangible nature.
This Curricular Unit will try to compound the theoretical and empirical body of knowledge of the Sociology of Tourism to an indispensable effort of its conceptual and theoretical renewal.
Another aim is that the knowledge acquired in this Curricular Unit allows students to choose tourism phenomena as a subject for their dissertations.

Teaching Methods
The adopted teaching methodologies are based on the assumption that students play an active role in the teaching-learning process. However, teaching methods and strategies will be adapted to the characteristics and interests of the group.
The classes will take the form of lectures, seminars, text discussions, orientated debates, viewing videos and field trips (Two of the lecturers of this Curricular Unit come from the University of Algarve, the most visited region in Portugal, whereas the third one comes from the University of Évora, a town classified as «Cultural Heritage of the Humanity»). Then, field trips into this two regions will be envisaged.
Assessment: an individual written essay on a subject included in the syllabus and previously accorded with the teachers or a written review of a recently published book on a subject treated during the course.
