Understanding of the rural space nowadays, in the transition fromproductivism topost-productivism and from
the challenges raised by this transition. Identification of the main approaches of for the study of the ruralareas
today ,andof the main theoretical concepts and explanatory models.Notions of function,multifunctionality,
commodity and non-commodity. Supply and demand of the rural functions in rural landscapes. Identification of
the main policies and tools and the related impacts.

Contents

Theories and Methods. Functions and Multifunctionality, Policies and Instruments.
The Rural territory and landscape, productivism and post-productivism, multifunctionality, commodity and
non-commodity outputs, private and public goods and services. Contribution from the seeral disciplines and
theoretical constructions, the several currents. Explanatory models. Policies and Instruments, impacts and
requirements for integrative policies which make it possible to compensate for the non-commodity functions.

Teaching Methods

Lectures by the responsibleprofessor and by invited experts, reading and discussion of documents, field visits
to the rural space, making and discussion of a practical work made by the students, based on discussions in
class, in the field, bibliographic research and aplication to a case study area.
Evaluation: from the participation in and the discussions oriented by the professor + practical work
developed on the case study, with an oral and writen presentation.
