To provide students theoretical knowledge on the roots of the European Public Health System and of the Welfare State bridging them with the historic, economic, and politician processes
To discuss health and welfare as a broad concepts, related to the specificity of the geographic and chronologic contexts.

To develop competencies in a range of historical and inter-disciplinary approaches within the history of poor relief, health care and welfare.

Contents
Historical overview of the European poor relief, health care and welfare system;
Analysis of the political, religious and economic determinants of modern public health and welfare systems and their historical path;
The construction of concepts and social representations in historical perspective and the social inclusion/exclusion questions associated.

Teaching Methods
The teaching methodology is diversified trying to promote an active and participative learning. The concepts and the theoretical fundaments of the curricular unit will be exposed using the analysis of different sources, encouraging the students to participate through research work, the organization of information and the systematization and analysis of the recommended readings.
The E-learning platform (moodle) will be used for the development of learning activities.
Continuous assessment: small papers (2pp) for each one of the major topics, from selected bibliography. Workshops and participation in discussion sessions organized in context. Research project (15 pp) and its oral presentation.
