Presentation

The CU "Curriculum in the 21st Century" aims to discuss, on the basis of research, the curricula and the organisation of educational processes in their capacity to respond to the societal challenges of today's world and to the aims of 21st century education and the construction of a sustainable world.

To identify and understand the aim of education in the 21st century;
To identify and understand the challenges of today's world;
To know the different types of learning and to analyse them according to the different national and international reference frameworks;
To know the characteristics of quality learning environments;
To argue in a scientifically sustained way, the curricular and pedagogical implications associated with the challenges of the 21st century.

Contents

1. The aim of education in the 21st century and implications for the curriculum:
a. Individual training, preparation for professions, participation in society
2. The challenges of today's world and education in the 21st century
a. Education for sustainability
b. Inclusive education in a plural society
c. Education for democracy and citizenship
3. Types of learning: Knowledge, skills, attitudes/dispositions and competences
a. National and international reference frameworks
i. The profile of the student at the end of compulsory schooling
ii. Key competences for lifelong learning
Iii. The STEAM approach (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics)
4. Characteristics of quality learning environments
b. Pedagogical models and strategies
c. Pedagogical differentiation
e. The Interactions and quality learning

Teaching Methods

Cooperative planning of the themes to be addressed; Lessons with oral presentation and debate taught by teachers of the UC and by invited experts in areas to be deepened according to the students’ profile; presentation and discussion by students about research summaries on the themes identified.
Continuous assessment:
A. (20%) Presentation and discussion of works done during classes.
B. (80%) Written work: Identification and reasoned reflection of a problem, in the context of the challenges of the 21st century curriculum, based on a review of research in the area.
Final evaluation: (100%) Written work and its oral discussion: Identification and reasoned reflection of a problem, in the scope of the challenges of the 21st century curriculum, based on a review of research in the area.
