Basic Fundamentals of Laser Therapy in Maternal and Child Health

Photobiomodulation has established itself as a non-invasive therapeutic approach based on the interaction of light with biological tissues, with biological effects dependent on wavelength, dose, radiance, application time, and target tissue characteristics. In the context of Nursing, knowledge of its fundamentals is relevant to strengthen scientific literacy, clinical reasoning, and evidence-based practice, particularly in areas where pain, inflammation, healing, and tissue repair are of particular importance, such as maternal and child health. This introductory course aims to present the scientific principles of photobiomodulation, its mechanisms of action, the main areas of clinical application described in the literature, as well as aspects of safety, regulation, and professional responsibility. The training is exclusively theoretical and does not qualify for the clinical practice of laser therapy; it does not include technical protocols or therapeutic parameters, and is intended to provide a conceptual basis for critical analysis of the subject and possible further study. Examples from the postpartum period, breastfeeding, and pediatric/neonatal contexts will be prioritized, while simultaneously acknowledging the clinical potential of photobiomodulation and the current limitations of evidence in various application domains.
