Learning Goals

The objective of this curricular unit is to introduce students to the different digital technologies that can be used in irrigation management, providing them with information and knowledge that will allow them to use these technologies to improve irrigation practices with the aim of increasing the productivity of agricultural production, but also from an environmental perspective of preserving water resources.
The aim is for students to acquire skills in: i) identifying the best irrigation strategy for their particular situation, depending on the crop, soil and water availability; ii) choosing the technologies to be used to monitor the water deficit of plants; iii) identifying the need for differentiated irrigation management.

Contents

Crop water requirements and irrigation planning. Objectives and strategies for irrigation management. Monitoring water deficits. Full and deficit irrigation. Precision irrigation. Advantages and disadvantages of differentiated irrigation application and management.

Teaching Methods

Theoretical and practical classes: where the theoretical concepts regarding this subject will be presented and some application exercises based on practical cases will be carried out. Seminars: experts, preferably professionals from the sector, will be invited to allow for a more in-depth information about some of the issues regarding this subject and to provide an overview of the application of this knowledge in the job market.

Assessment

Class attendance and participation (20%). Written test (80%).
