Course Overview

Fundamentals of Climate course covers essential concepts in the physics of climate and climate change, such as radiation, the greenhouse effect, atmospheric and oceanic circulation, radiative forcing, feedback mechanisms and climate sensitivity. It also explores the relationship between climate and the climate system, including climate characterisation and climate classifications, with a specific focus on the climate of Portugal. It discusses the greenhouse effect in the atmosphere, the Earth's energy balance, and the general circulation of the atmosphere and oceans, with examples of ocean-atmosphere interactions. The course also covers the history of climate, radiative forcing and atmospheric composition, considering natural and anthropogenic impacts. Finally, recent climate change, methods of detection and attribution of causes are explored, as well as an introduction to climate models and their global and regional projections.

Este curso destina-se a técnicos de meteorologia do IPMA ou outras entidades nacionais ou estrangeiras cuja missão inclua responsabilidades nas áreas da meteorologia, meteorologia aeronáutica e clima e com necessidades de formação nesta área. Destina-se ainda a técnicos da Proteção civil e Autarquias, ou a qualquer pessoa interessada nestas áreas, cuja formação inicial seja adequada para aquisição dos conhecimentos e competências a adquirir com esta formação.
