Learning Goals
This curricular unit aims to make students aware of the specificity of the study and use of medicinal plants in the prevention, treatment, and diagnosis of diseases, regarding to the synergism of their constituents and the complementarity of their action, as well as the medicinal plants most used in products herbal health care and its respective therapeutic use as well as the main contraindications and interactions inherent to its use.
Students should acquire technical, scientific and research skills, to manipulate and use herbal health products, as well as to evaluate the quality, effectiveness and safety of these products, necessary for the correct advice of medicinal plants and health products based on plants.

Teaching Methods
The teaching methodology is organized based on the lecture of the theoretical contents in seminar sessions, in synchronous distance sessions and in face-to-face practical classes.
The lectures are organized by topics, in the format of seminars, which will be supported by recommended bibliography and relevant issues in scientific journals. The practical classes will allow to carry out studies about the characterization of active constituents and evaluation of their pharmacological potential.
The syllabus is approached in an interactive way, valuing autonomous work and the development of a critical attitude and scientific rigor.
Students will be an active part of the learning and the dynamics of the sessions and are evaluated by continuous assessment and must prepare a Research Work about therapeutic applications of some medicinal plants (pharmacological group to be selected, by 1-2 students), and a Final practical Report (2 to 3 students).

Assessment
Students will be evaluated by continuous assessment. Theoretical component (50%) will be evaluated based on students' participation in synchronous activities, as well as the elaboration of a Research Work / Monography about on therapeutic applications of some medicinal plants. The practical component (50%) will be evaluated continuously, based on the student's attendance and participation in practical classes, with the preparation of a Practical Report with the results obtained in practical classes.
The final classification will be quantitative (0-20 values) and must obtain a final grade uper than 9,5 values, to obtain the certificate of approval.
