Presentation

This UC presents the basic concepts about pharmacoeconomics, concepts and process of economic evaluation of medicines and medical devices, the Methodological Guidelines for Economic Evaluation Studies, at national and community level, and the most relevant legislation and standards in this area.

5. To know and interpret pharmacoeconomic laws and regulations – at national and European level;
6. To identify and understand pharmacoeconomic evolution and challenges.

Contents

1. Introduction to pharmacoeconomics;
2. Economic evaluation of medicines:
a. Concepts, analysis techniques, models and statistical analysis;
b. Costs: identification, measures and value;
c. Consequences: identification and measures;
3. Economic evaluation of medical devices (MDs);
4. Health technology assessment:
a. Introduction, pricing and co-payment system;
b. Evaluation process of medicines and MDs;
c. SINATS, co-payment system, stages and evaluation commissions;
d. Financing;
5. Pharmacoeconomics regulation in Portugal and Europe;
6. Pharmacoeconomics evolution and challenges.

Teaching Methods

Theoretical teaching will be essentially expository. Indirect (constructivist) teaching will also be developed, both in theoretical classes and in theoretical-practical classes.

The evaluation will be divided into two stages:

1. Continuous assessment:
- Theoretical (60%), theoretical test at the end of the semester;
- Theoretical-practical (40%), group work.
For approval, the student must obtain a weighted average of 9.5 or more.

2. Evaluation by final exam (100%).
For approval, the student must obtain a rating equal to or greater than 9.5 values.
