Sustainable Development Goals

Learning Goals

It is intended that students acquire the appropriate knowledge for the design of reinforced concrete structural elements, namely with regard to durability, safety in relation to ultimate and service limit states and the constructive provisions to be adopted in the detailing of reinforcements. This methodology will be applied to beams and columns. Students will be able to: - Understand the behavior of structural elements, beams and pillars, and proceed with their design; - Detailing structural elements of reinforced concrete; - Evaluate the suitability of the proposed solutions in terms of cost-performance.

Contents

1. Historical and normative framework – Regulations, Norms and Eurocodes.
2. Behavior of reinforced concrete structures – concrete and steel.
3. Safety in structural design. Concepts, actions, combinations of actions and limit states.
4. Characterization of the constituent elements of reinforced concrete - Concrete and Steel.
5. Durability of structures.
6. Ultimate Bending Limit States, shear and torsion of linear elements subject to negligible axial forces. Constructive provisions. 7. Behavior in service – Deformation, stress control and cracking.
8. Ultimate Bending Limit States composed of linear elements subject to non-negligible axial forces. Constructive provisions.

Teaching Methods

The knowledge will be taught in theoretical-practical classes, being exposed the basic concepts that, later, will be object of application through concrete examples. In laboratory classes, tests will be carried out with concrete and reinforced concrete beams.

Assessment

Assessment is ensured through the completion of two practical assignments (Work) and two frequencies (Freq) throughout the semester or final exam (Exa). Normal Season: continuous assessment (0.8Freq + 0.2Work) or final assessment (0.8Exa + 0.2Work). The evaluation at the time of appeal, special, extraordinary meets the following components: 0.8Exa+ 0.2Work. Minimum grade of 8.0 val in any of the evaluation elements.
