Sustainable Development Goals

Learning Goals

It is intended that students acquire the appropriate knowledge for the design of structural steel elements, namely with regard to the verification of safety in relation to the ultimate and use limit states and constructive provisions to be adopted. This methodology will be applied in accordance with the principles recommended in Eurocode 3. Students will be able to:
- Understand the behavior of structural elements, beams and pillars, and proceed with their design;
- Understand the behavior of connecting joints between structural elements and consider how to model and dimension them.

Contents

1. Regulatory framework - Eurocodes. Bases for sizing. Limit states and design situations. Stock rating. Calculation values of shares and effects of shares.
2. Material properties - steel
3. Combination of Actions - Ultimate and Service Limit States
4. Analysis of steel structures. Elastic analysis and plastic analysis. 1st and 2nd order effects. Geometric imperfections. Section classification.
5. Design of elements in steel structures. Cross sections - tension, compression, bending moment, shear force and interaction between forces.
6. Buckling resistance - compressed elements.
7. Service Limit States.
8. Connections in steel structures. Screw connections for cutting and tension Analysis, classification and modeling of joints. H or I profile joints.

Teaching Methods

The knowledge will be taught in theoretical-practical classes, being exposed the basic concepts that, later, will be object of application through concrete examples. In laboratory classes, tests will be carried out with beams.

Assessment

Assessment is ensured through the completion of a practical work (Work) and a frequency (Freq) during the semester or final exam (Exa). Normal Season: continuous assessment (0.8Freq + 0.2Work) or final assessment (0.8Exa + 0.2Work). The evaluation at the time of appeal, special, extraordinary meets the following components: 0.8Exa+ 0.2Work. Minimum grade of 8.0 val in any of the evaluation elements.
