Sustainable Development Goals

Learning Goals

Provide students with a global view of Topography and Cartography issues, in a form of introduction to several closely related disciplines: Geodesy, Mathematical Cartography, Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing. Students should understand the flat earth hypothesis, the methods used in Geodesy, know how to read plans and maps, know the methods of topographic survey, recognize and know how to handle topographic observation equipment and perform trigonometric and geometric leveling operations and transport of coordinates.

Contents

1. Introduction to cartography: cartography, reference surfaces, cartographic projections and projection systems and rectangular plane coordinates;
2. Observable Quantities and Observation Equipment;
3. Measuring, Correcting and Reducing Distances;
4. Topographic surveys: survey methods, irradiation, triangulation and polygonization;
5. Photogrammetry Surveys: 3D modeling in the creation of topographical surfaces, definition. Contour curves, elaboration of MDT and MDS from contour lines and/or quoted points and determination of landfill and excavation volumes.

Teaching Methods

The knowledge will be administered in theoretical-practical and practical-laboratory classes where application exercises will be solved, encouraging the practical component whenever possible. Fieldwork classes will be carried out abroad to apply knowledge to real problems of surveying and implantation using a total station and small projects will be carried out, to be solved in groups, either at the level of cartographic study of a certain area on a military chart , or at the implementation study level. The study process should be autonomous with tutorial monitoring. Mobility students will be specially monitored, looking for bibliography in English.

Assessment

The evaluation in normal season: continuous with one Frequency and two assignments (0.50Freq+0.50Work) or final with Exam and two assignments (0.50Exa+0.50Work). The evaluation in special, extraordinary, appeal period meets the following components: Exam and two Papers (0.50Exa+0.50Work). The work takes place during the school weeks according to the proper schedule. Minimum grade of 8.0 in frequencies and exam.
