This is the only broad-based first-cycle Human Biology course of its kind in Portugal. This course provides a solid theoretical foundation allied with significant experimental training, giving students an interdisciplinary and integrated biological perspective of the human species, including evolution, growth, anatomy and physiology.
The areas covered include biology of diseases, and the metabolic and immunological responses and adaptation to stress factors of different aetiology, given that proven climate change adds complexity and uncertainty to human health issues, namely, population dynamics, emerging infectious diseases, non-communicable diseases, food security and food safety, increased use and circulation of synthetic chemicals, antimicrobial resistance, and sustainable production and consumption. To this end, and to achieve better overall and global health outcomes, a multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary approach is followed, based on the One Health concept.
