Summary

Seismic Tomography produce detailed images of the crust, the lithosphere and the mantle in terms of velocities variations or absolutes velocities. Local Earthquake Tomography - LET permit determination of P and S waves velocities in the middle, using natural seismicity of the region as source. This project will be permit to apply this technique for the first time and in particular in the Southern part of the country. LET of Monchique-Portimão and Loulé-Faro, main objective of this project, will permit a better and more detailed understanding of the structure of the continental crust and provide a key for constrain the updip limit of the seismogenic zone in view to determine the earthquake source areas and active fault zones of the M-P and L-F regions. The results will contribute yet again to a better control of the seismic risk assessment of the region under study.

Objectives

A Tomografia Sísmica Local de Monchique-Portimão e de Loulé-Faro permitirá um melhor e mais detalhado conhecimento da estrutura da crosta continental e constringira os limites da zona sismogénica na perspectiva de determinar as áreas de geração de sismos e as zonas de falhas activas. Os resultados contribuíram ainda para uma melhor avaliação e controle do risco sísmico nesta região.
